Egg exercise in oil paint

Have the same egg and velvet front of you, which you used for the watercolour exercise, or the photograph of it. Draw the egg shape in red or green paint or coloured pencil, on the support. Make it quite small, so that you can try again on the same support, if you want to.

First clean your brushes. Now use the Viridian and Red, mix together and try the Egg Exercise described earlier in this chapter.

Egg in oil, Viridian and Light red.

If you use a little siccative to mix into the paint to thin it down, the paint will dry more quickly, and you will be able to work at the exercise a little longer. Another useful tip to help the drying process is to use lighter fuel instead of turps. However, it is very volatile, flammable, and it evaporates, so use it with caution.

Using these methods to thin the paint when carrying out an exercise such as this is very useful, but you will soon discover that oil paint can only be worked on for a limited time, otherwise you will end up with mud.

Most miniaturists who paint mostly in oils have more than one painting to work on at a time – several in fact! Then they move from one to the next, ensuring that they will be working on an oil that is dry.
